GETTING
STARTED
Our history is one of
success and enjoyment in the field of Tai Chi
practise. Whatever your particular reason
for learning this beautiful art, be it stress
management, personal development, health &
fitness, spiritual development or simply for exercise,
I can guarantee no other programmes in New Zealand
are more established or better capable of delivering
you the high quality results that you will receive
from our school.
We will ensure that your
entry to our school is both dignified and enjoyable.
Practise will be light and well within your fitness
level, so relax and enjoy your practise. After
a couple of minutes of quiet standing (posture
alignment and relaxing) the gentle stretching
exercises begin. This includes some of the most
well known Tai Chi forms such as “relax,
let go” (Sung) “White Crane spreads
Wings” and the "Preparing Form."
(There are many forms named after animal movements.)
After about ten to fifteen minutes you will be
asked to sit down and rest. Tai Chi is a powerful
art form and it is important that a relaxed approach
is taken to the learning process.
What should I wear?
Tai Chi clothing is available if and when you
decide you would like to wear the more relaxed
clothing. There are two main concepts widely adopted
throughout the western world and China regarding
Tai Chi clothing. The first utilises the principle
of opposites - Yin Yang i.e. black pants and white
top. The other is to wear the full Chinese costume.
Please check with your Instructor prior to purchasing
any Tai Chi equipment or clothing. Our Supplies
Department stocks a wide range of Tai Chi Equipment.
Casual, comfortable clothing is all you need to
practise Tai Chi at the beginning.
Will health problems
affect my ability to practise Tai Chi?
TCNZ recommends that you first check with your
medical advisor when commencing a Tai Chi programme.
Robert Gemmell emphasises that anyone regardless
of age, shape, physical ability or fitness level
can do Tai Chi. Care must be taken if you do have
a condition or physical disability. However, by
using the 5 Step Method developed by Robert Gemmell
anyone can do it. Even if restricted to a wheel
chair, Tai Chi can still be beneficial and enjoyable.
Please observe all Health and Safety policies
outlined by your Instructor.
It is important to always
rest when you feel tired. Do not adopt the usual
attitude associated with physical activity, that
of pushing yourself on. A single movement is often
enough in itself to release and free up the blocked
energy path. True Tai Chi can only emerge from
a relaxed physical and mental state. Always create
from within, a happy or positive frame of mind.
Morning practise is best. This
coincides with the universal energy field in which
we live. Our energy patterns are cyclical, and
the ancient art of Tai Chi was derived from the
study of this energy field and its effect on our
body. Select natural surroundings, preferably
outdoors.
Practise will vary according
to your own interest and knowledge. Some practise
only at classes, with attendance ranging from
1 - 3 times a week. It is recommended to do a
little each day.
